At Wm. Lewis & Son, we know what it takes to make great music: craftsmanship, patience, cooperation.

We recognize that the excellence of the orchestra depends on each individual.

We know that recognition comes from a job well done. We've been building qualities into our stringed instruments for years, putting a symbol of success right into the hands of students.

From our attention to detail, to quality materials and workmanship, a Wm. Lewis & Son stringed instrument gives players a firsthand look at what it means to do things right.

William Lewis (1835-1902) achieved initial recognition as a professional violinist and teacher in Chicago.

One of his foremost students was Maud Powell, one of the first American-born concert violinists. In 1870 William joined the Root-Cady Music Company.

Concerned by the lack of quality instruments and service for his students and colleagues, William formed the Chicago Music Company in 1874 with his partners Newell and Gibbs.

Located in the heart of the Chicago business district, players from the finest symphony orchestras in the world would often visit Lewis' shop to have their own instruments appraised or serviced.

Amati, Guarneri, and Stradivarius were commonly in inventory.

He later renamed the business Wm. Lewis Company (1886) as Wm. Lewis & Son (1896).

Fred Lewis succeeded his father as president of the company.

Today, Wm. Lewis & Son instruments continue the legacy of quality and service for orchestral string musicians.

The Violin: A Study in Contradictions
A violin is crafted of about 80 parts, together weighing in at little over one pound.

It's a delicate structure that is precisely engineered to withstand nearly 70 pounds of string tension.

To the untrained eye, all violins may look alike.

To the expert, however, no two instruments are identical.

Today, Lewis instruments are crafted in the same tradition as they were a century ago.

We insist upon properly aged premium wood for the most resonant sounding instruments, and still carefully hand adjust each instrument to meet or exceed the critical tolerances established by the Music Educators National Conference, giving each violin, viola, cello and bass that leaves our hands its unique sound and soul.

We call this process

"Stradjustment";

a patent, final adjustment procedure that guarantees every Lewis instrument lives up to its fullest potential.
