Customer Feedback from Antigua Artists:
Randy Janoski – The Antigua Soprano SS3286LQ (A586-LQ) .
“I had not played soprano in performances for several years
then in 2007 I began a search for a new soprano
that led me through several manufactures.”
Randy came to the 2008 summer NAMM in Nashville
and met Randy Huey of Antigua Winds. Janoski recalls,
“I was immediately impressed with Antigua’s line of sopranos.
Randy Huey confirmed the research I had done about Antigua Winds’
commitment to quality and enlightened me about the different model features
of the entire saxophone line.
I played the SS4290LQ, SS3286LQ and SS3282LQ,
unlike some other manufactures that increase quality and finish
as their models progress upward;
I saw a difference with Antigua in that all their offerings
had superb fit and finishes, ergonomics and excellent engraving.
The best aspect though is the sound.
The tone, timbre and intonation of the Antigua sopranos had everything
I had been searching for and for me the
SS3286LQ was the perfect find!”
“The soprano saxophone is so difficult to play well.
With a lot of sopranos your concentration level has to be so high
in order to overcome intonation concerns
and the all too prevalent nasal tendencies
your performance suffers, at least to your own ears!
With the Antigua soprano I am able to easily achieve the nuances of sound
and melody substance I strive to inject into my performances.”
Micole Kaar – For the second year in a row,
Mikole Kaar demonstrated several wood wind instruments –
primarily playing the Antigua A590-BC PRO Soprano Saxophone,
and the PRO Power Bell alto and tenor, A521-BCGK and
A551-BCGK instruments in the Antigua Winds booth at NAMM 2006.
He really enjoys the playability and the dark sound emanating from the black chrome finished
Antigua PRO horns. “Mikole is a great jazz musician in the tradition of
Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz”
Paul Hanson, Jazz Bassoonist,
Bela Fleck Band. Born in New York City,
Mikole began studying the clarinet at age 9.
He attended California State University, Northridge,
and the Dick G–rove School of Music,
while cramming in private lessons with
Warren Marsh, Don Menza, and Charlie Shoemake.
Mikole departed his jazz roots in the 70’s
to play with
the Drifters,
The Coasters,
Ink Spots,
Platters,
Al Wilson,
The Temptations and even did a date or two with
Joe Cocker.
After playing jazz and touring in Europe in 1985,
he released several albums which include
“Back to the Heart”, “Victory in the Morning”,
“A Fifth of Midnight”, and most recently “Six Horn Strut”.
His clarinet days have evolved to include an array of horns,
including tenor sax, soprano sax, flute, and bassoon.
He uses all of his instruments to express his unique voice.
Formerly president of the San Diego Jazz Artists Guild,
Mikole currently resides in southern California.
Paul Coats – I am very pleased with my new Antigua A590-LQ soprano saxophone.
This soprano has two necks, straight and curved, and is keyed up to high G.
Fit and finish areexcellent, top-notch. It is also beautifully and extensively engraved.
But it is in the playing that this soprano really shines.
The bore shape provides good octave to octave intonation.
The palm keys and high A do not tend to sharpness as do many sopranos.
The tone is warm and rich like a small sax… not at all nasa or “oboe-ish”.
The key layout of this instrument is very good, and one of the few saxes
that I have not had to add risers to the palm and side keys.
The keys lie under the fingers just where you expect them to be.
I also had the opportunity to extensively play test the Antigua A582-LQ
(one piece straight body keyed to high F#) and A586-LQ (two necks, high F# key).
These two sopranos have the same fine fit and finish, and engraving as the Antigua A590-LQ.
The A582-LQ and the A586-LQ share the same warm,
saxy tone and excellent intonation present in the A590-LQ.
I have been playing the Antigua A530-SP silver plated alto saxophone
for several years now.
Besides the striking appearance (silver with lacquered keys),
this alto has wonderful tone and intonation.
With many altos today, in order to get the middle D
(which tends to be sharp on many saxophones)
to play well in tune, the low D is very flat.
This makes it necessary to add the low C# key
for pitch correction for sustained low D tones.
However with this instrument and it’s sister, the A530-SPC
(silver plated body and keys), this is unnecessary.
Both D’s play well in tune. Another problem note,
the upper register A tends to sharpness on many saxophones,
but not on the A530-SP alto.
Other altos I have played were as much as 15 cents sharp
in the upper register, as compared to the low register.
The A530-SP Advanced alto does not exhibit this problem,
and has excellent octave to octave intonation.
The tone of the Antigua A530-SP is dark and rich,
and just right for playing in my saxophone ensemble.
But this sax has good projection for lead alto or solo work
the Antigua A530 does it all and does it well.
Paul Coats at www.saxontheweb.net/Coats/.
Paul often plays for us at our TMEA and TBA shows
and is an ardent supporter of Antigua from Metarie, LA.
Steve Clarke – Steve Clarke, recipient of 5 Minnesota Music Awards for
“Horn Player of the Year”, recently played the new Limited Edition PRO Power Bell
Tenor A551-LTD at the NAMM 2006 show.
“You (Antigua Winds) have a very nice tenor.
I was impressed with the sound, feel and playability of the horn I tried out -
a Limited Edition Antigua PRO Power Bell Tenor;
and was even able to hit a double high "A" (above high "F").
Steve plays tenor, soprano, baritone,
flute and alto flute and has appeared on about 50 recordings and
continues to add more recordings, commercials and jingles.
Steve and his band called "The Working Stiffs",
www.workingstiffs.org,
have received 2 Minnesota Music Awards
with 4 nominations in their 3 year history.
They just released their first CD "Metropolitan".
Jack R. Waas – Associate Professor of Chemistry. B.A., Swarthmore College,
1990; M.S., University of Michigan, 1992; Ph.D., University of Michigan, 1997.
As you may have noticed from the relevant threads,
I am now a happy owner of an Antigua A586-BC Soprano!
I brought it to church today and I can’t overstate how impressed I was with it,
so much easier to manage than my Pan American (Conn) soprano.
Also, I’ve always wanted a black nickel sax!
GREAT! Man, are these some really nice little saxes or WHAT?
I play in church, too, with organ and choir.
Playing with organ, that will
REALLY keep you honest about intonation, huh?
Antigua musical instruments deliver the clear sound
and smooth playability that great musicians count on.
Seen and heard in venues worldwide, Antigua resounds quality.
